Born in Chicago in 1979, Ruben Marroquin spent his formative years in Caracas, Venezuela, where he first explored textiles as an alternative to traditional art media. After moving to New York in 2004, he earned a BA in Textile and Surface Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology, specializing in both hand and computerized weaving.
Marroquin's work blends formal training with intuitive exploration. Through self-taught embroidery techniques, he has developed a distinctive abstract language that manifests in large-scale textile wrapped reliefs. His cross-cultural perspective infuses his creations with unique visual rhythms and material sensibilities.
Currently working between studios in New York City and Bridgeport, Connecticut, Marroquin continues to push the boundaries of textile art through innovative techniques and unconventional materials.
