Ground from the Ground
by Annalisa Barron
Artist Statement
« …I will gather the sand in the surrounding area and combine it with a milk-protein base I make for my paintings – a ‘ground from the ground’. Then, I will harvest native plants each week and create a still life that I will use as the inspiration for a series of surrealist meditations on my time in Hyeres. What I learn about the area through making these works will be available for the public via short hand written notes in a single open journal. The walls of the gallery will each be their own composition made of small color tests, fresh and dried plants, and pantry-like shelves with jars of dirt and sand. The presence of the plants will create an additional element to the composition of the space – through smell and reference to taste…. »

In 2013, when I was 25, I made a film called E.V.E.: Erectus Vegetabilis Evitaneus. I foraged through the woods for things that reminded me of the human body and ultimately created an 8ft marionette made from native plants. The process was a bit like being in rehab for my senses after spending too much time with man-made art supplies (she had crab apple eyes and blades of grass in her throat – I blew through blades of grass in the score so she could ‘sing’). I kept my mind as open as possible at that time and I’m hoping to do the same @lmstudiohyeres this June!
